The native village appropriated by Hernando de Soto for five months (1539-40) as his winter quarters. At least eight priests accompanied this expedition, but the de Soto accounts do not indicate whether a special structure was built for church services or whether the priests made an effort to convert the natives de Soto had impressed along the way as servants. The persistent hostility of the Apalachee precluded proselytization except for those taken prisoner. B. Calvin Jones located this site in the spring of 1987 as construction was beginning on part of the site. The site is being explored under the direction of Charles Ewen and Jones.
